JALCOG Adaptive TutorGuidesHelp for parents

How it works: a guide for students

Practise maths at your own level. The questions get harder as you get them right, and help is aimed at the mistake you actually made.

To print this guide, or save it as a PDF, use your browser's Print.

  1. On your own device, go to the start page and choose Student sign-in.
  2. Type your Family code, Your name and your PIN, then choose Start practising. Your parent can find the family code on their family page.
  3. When you've finished, choose Sign out.

On a parent's device, your parent chooses Practise as and your name instead. Choose Exit when you've finished.

Find your starting point

  1. The first time, the tutor offers to find your starting point. Choose Find my starting point, or Skip for now.
  2. Answer each question, then choose Next. If you haven't learned something yet, choose I haven't learned this yet. That's fine: it helps the tutor start in the right place.
  3. At the end you see where you're starting, and What you already know.

It takes about 15 minutes, nothing is marked as you go, and you can stop at any time.

Answer a question

  1. Type your answer in the box. The maths keyboard has fractions, powers and square roots, or choose Type it instead and type / for a fraction, ^ for a power and sqrt for a square root.
  2. Choose Check.
  3. You can type your working one line at a time instead of just the answer. Each line is checked, so you find out straight away if a step goes wrong. Your lines stay under Your working.
  4. For a graph question, tap the grid to put your points on it, or choose Type the coordinates instead.
  5. For Pythagoras and trigonometry, have your own calculator ready, set to degrees, and round your answer as the question asks.

Get help when you're stuck

  1. After a wrong answer you get a hint, aimed at the mistake you made. Have another go.
  2. A new skill starts with a short introduction: the Key ideas, a worked example step by step, and what to Watch out for. The example stays under your first question, in Like the example.
  3. Choose Show me how to see the introduction again at any time.

If a question looks wrong to you, choose This question looks wrong at the bottom of the page and tell us what's wrong. We read every one.

Keep going

  1. Questions get harder as you get them right, from easy to medium to hard, and each level brings something new. A mistake you keep making keeps you at medium until you've got past it.
  2. The bar at the top shows your mastery of the skill. When you've mastered it, choose Keep going for the next skill.
  3. Now and then a question comes from a skill you mastered before, marked Review:, so you don't forget it.
  4. Today: shows how many questions you've done towards today's goal.

See your progress and messages

  1. Choose Progress to see this week, your skills, the Mistakes to work on, what's Due for review and your Recent answers.
  2. Signed in on your own device, choose Messages to read and answer messages from your tutor. Your parents can see these messages, and what you write.

Make it easier to read

  1. Choose Aa at the top for Larger text or More spacing.
  2. Choose the moon to Use dark theme, or the sun to go back.
