Why does my child round 3.142 to 3.15?

Your child rounds up when the next digit is less than 5, such as 3.142 to 2 decimal places as 3.15.

Why children do it

Some children learn "round up" as the whole idea, and do it every time. But rounding goes to whichever value is nearer, and 3.142 is nearer 3.14. Only a next digit of 5 or more rounds up.

How to help at home

Look at the next digit along: less than 5 means the digit you keep stays the same.

The right way

Round 1.154 to 2 decimal places.

  1. 1.15The digit after 1.15 is 4, which is less than 5, so it stays.
