Why does my child round 3.146 to 3.14?
Your child cuts off digits instead of rounding, such as 3.146 to 2 decimal places as 3.14.
Why children do it
Cutting off the extra digits gives an answer with the right number of decimal places, so it looks right. But rounding means finding the nearest value, and 3.146 is nearer 3.15 than 3.14. The digit after the last one kept decides which way to go.
How to help at home
Look at the next digit along: 5 or more rounds up, less than 5 stays the same.
The right way
Round 1.77 to 1 decimal place.
- 1.8The digit after 1.7 is 7, which is 5 or more, so round up.
